Pet owners frequently refer to their pets as being members of their family. This is because pets are much like people and have many of the same emotions and needs. Like humans, pets need companionship and enjoy bonding, and these particular traits make it possible for humans to become very close to their animals.
If you have a dog, you can play catch with him or her with a tennis ball or another toy they like to play with. Catch is a game that can be played with just about any toy as long as it isn't harmful to your pet and you don't mind if the toy gets chewed up beyond recognition.
If you are a cat owner, there are many things you can do with your pet. Red laser lights are fun to play with if you have a cat because you can shine it on the wall or floor and the cat will chase it as you move it around. An older cat that discovers that you are holding the small laser light may stop playing this game, but kittens are know to be especially playful and may continue to chase the light even if they know you are controlling it.
Most cats and some dogs will respond to a string being moved slowly across the floor. This sounds odd, but if you place a string or some yarn on the floor in front of a cat or dog and slowly pull that string away from the pet, the animal may playfully chase the string. Dogs and older cats usually need to be fooled for this to work, so hide your control of the string as much as possible. But again, kittens are likely to play with the string even if they know you are controlling it.
